300,000 + Sounders

attendees in recent editions

Arenal Sound has become one of Spain’s major coastal music festivals, turning Burriana into a seasonal destination for young people from across the country and beyond.

Problem

After the last song, what stays behind?

The festival ends on a Sunday. The beach keeps the evidence for a lot longer. Roughly 120 tonnes of it, collected edition after edition.

Plastic

  • Single-use cups
  • Plastic bottles
  • Food packaging

The highest-volume, most visible stream, and the easiest one to design out.

Tents

  • Abandoned tents
  • Mattresses
  • Camping chairs

Cheap camping gear bought for one weekend and left standing on the sand.

Butts

  • Cigarette butts

Small, countless, and the hardest thing to get back out of the sand.

Food

  • Food waste
  • Packaging residue

Organic waste mixed into general waste, which stops both from being recovered.

Microplastics

  • Glitter
  • Synthetic-material fragments

Too small to sweep up. Once it is in the sand and the water, it stays.

Consequences

  • Beach ecosystem damage
  • Marine pollution
  • Degradation of sand quality
  • Visual pollution
  • Abandoned camping equipment
  • Microplastic accumulation
  • Water-quality impacts
  • Local biodiversity impacts
  • High carbon footprint from transport, generators and mass consumption

300+ Recycling points

Arenal Sound is not standing still. More than 300 recycling bins are already installed across the venue. The argument here is that collecting waste is the last step, and prevention and reuse should come first.

Rules 01 to 07

New Rules

Every figure below is an indicative estimate for a proposal. Not a quoted price, and not current festival policy.

Ideas, not invoices.

  1. Rule 01

    One cup. All festival.

Replace disposable cups with a durable reusable cup in polypropylene or stainless steel. You get it once and you keep it for the whole weekend.

    1. 01 Attendee receives cup
    2. 02 Deposit attached to cup
    3. 03 Refill throughout festival
    4. 04 Return at collection point

    Indicative cost

    €1 - €2

    indicative, per unit

The deposit does the work: the cup is worth something, so it comes back instead of ending up on the sand.

  2. Rule 02

    Camp. Don’t dump.

Cut abandoned tents by discouraging throwaway camping gear and offering rentable modular camping units instead. You rent a setup that lasts rather than buying one that is designed to be left behind.

    Indicative cost

    €150 - €300

    indicative, per rental unit

Rental shifts the incentive. A unit that has to be returned is a unit that does not stay standing on the beach on Monday morning.

  3. Rule 03

The beach is not an ashtray.

Put cigarette-butt stations where people actually smoke: beach entrances and exits, bar areas, smoking areas and camping access points.

    1. 01 Beach entrances
    2. 02 Exits
    3. 03 Bar areas
    4. 04 Smoking areas
    5. 05 Camping access points

    Indicative cost

    €50 - €150

    indicative, each

The cheapest rule on this list, and the one that decides whether the sand is still sand in five years.

  4. Rule 04

    Food in. Plastic out.

Move vendors toward compostable food packaging, or toward reusable serving systems where the operation allows it.

    Indicative cost

    +10% - 20%

    indicative, versus conventional disposables

A single vendor cannot absorb this alone. Festival-wide vendor agreements spread the cost and make the switch worth doing.

  5. Rule 05

    Shine without microplastics.

Reduce conventional plastic glitter. Offer biodegradable alternatives, mark out glitter-free areas, and explain what microplastics actually do.

    1. 01 Biodegradable alternatives
    2. 02 Glitter-free areas
    3. 03 Communication on microplastics

    Indicative cost

    Low

mainly a communication and sourcing change

Nobody is asking anyone to look boring. Same shine, without the part that never leaves the water.

  6. Rule 06

Power the party with the sun.

Install solar-powered charging hubs for phones and small devices across the festival charging areas.

    1. 01 Phones
    2. 02 Small devices
    3. 03 Festival charging areas

    Indicative cost

    €3,000 - €10,000

    indicative investment, depending on system

The largest line on this list, and the only one that keeps paying back every edition after the first.

  7. Rule 07

    Optional, not settled

    Reuse the pitcher.

Where the operation allows it, replace disposable drink carafes with reusable stainless steel or other durable alternatives.

    Indicative cost

    Varies

    depends on bar operation

Listed as optional on purpose. Some bar setups can take this immediately, others cannot, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

Proposed system

Return. Reward. Repeat.

Bring recyclable material back to a collection point and it turns into something you actually want. The wristband is already cashless, so the mechanism already exists.

Presented as a concept. Arenal Sound does not currently operate this reward system.

  1. Return waste

Drop recyclables at a designated collection point.

  2. Scan wristband

The cashless wristband you already wear identifies you.

  3. Get points

Digital credit lands in your festival account.

  4. Unlock reward

Spend it on something worth carrying home.

Possible rewards

  • Festival merchandise
  • Small festival perks
  • Digital badges
  • Partner rewards

Digital only

Your festival. In your pocket.

Move as much festival communication as is practical into the app. Not every printed thing disappears, but most of them do not need to exist.

Less paper. More festival.

This does not eliminate all paper waste. It removes the paper that nobody keeps.

The festival world is already changing.

None of this is theoretical. Festivals across Europe have been running versions of these ideas for years.
